Government at all levels has been charged to step up advocacy, public education and enlightenment against drug abuse among Nigerians, most especially the youths.
Some stakeholders who gave the charge following disturbing trend of drug abuse in the country, advocated aggressive campaigns against misuse and abuse of controlled medicines.
Drug abuse according to the United Nations office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the use of psychoactive substance including alcohol and illicit drugs.
The global burden of disease study estimated that there were 585,000 deaths due to drug abuse globally.
According to a social activist, Mr Gbenga Adene, in Ondo State, the burden of drug abuse is on the rise and becoming a public health concern especially among the youths.
Adene pointed out that construction of rehabilitation centers may not be an effective way forward in curbing this act due to improper staff management of the state psychiatric hospital.
An officer with the Ondo State National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mrs Yetunde Jethro, said construction of rehabilitation centers is part of measures to keep the affected persons off the streets, and not have access to drugs.
She emphasized the need for more sensitization and creation of skill acquisition centers to engage the youth here in Ondo State.
In curbing the menace of drug abuse, experts urged the government to create more awareness, restructure the state psychiatric hospital and encourage the doctors in this department.
